Allah subhana wata’ala revealed to the Angels that He is going to create mankind generations after generations on earth. The Angels, who obey Allah night and day, responded to Allah by asking “Will You place on earth those who will make mischief and shed blood, while we glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You” Allah then responded “I know that which you do not know”
There was a good reason why the Angels asked Allah about the new creation, it was because of what had happened previously with the Jinn. Jinn are made from smokeless fire and were on Earth around 2000 years before Adam (‘alayhissalaam) was created. The Jinns caused a lot of harm when they were on earth by fighting each other and killing each other and so Allah sent an army of angels that drove them out to the depths of the seas.
Allah created Adam, the first man, out of clay with His own Hands. Once Adam was created Allah taught him the names of everything and then showed him to the angels and asked “Tell me the names of these if you are truthful” the angels did not know the names, therefore they replied “Glory be You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us” which was the case. The angels only knew what Allah taught them. Allah then looked towards Adam and said “Oh Adam, inform them of their names” and so, Adam did. Allah then said to the angels “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been hiding?”
Adam was then brought out in front of all the angels and one Jinn, named Iblis. Iblis was a very good, righteous Jinn, who used to worship Allah so much even though there was so much wrong around him on earth, so when the Jinns were expelled to deserted islands, Iblis was brought up to the gathering of the angels where he continued to worship Allah, until Adam was created.
Allah told all the angels to prostrate to Adam, every angel dropped down in prostration straight away, except Iblis, he refused because he felt that he was better than Adam. Iblis said “I am better than him, You created me from fire and You created him from clay” This was the moment that Iblis became a disbeliever as he disobeyed Allah and Allah then sent him out of Paradise, because he was arrogant, thinking he was better than Adam. Before Iblis left, he asked Allah if he could stay alive until the day of judgement, Allah granted that request. Iblis then said that he wants to send as many people astray as possible and take them into the hellfire with him.
Iblis went from being the best Jinn on earth that was taken up to Paradise to being the worst creation that existed, because he chose to disobey Allah and he did not ask for forgiveness or mend his ways. As well as that, he felt he was better than another creation of Allah because he was made out of smokeless fire and the other from clay. His arrogance and disobedience to Allah caused him to be destined for hellfire.
Adam was then allowed into Paradise and he was given a wife, named Hawa. They were both allowed to be free in paradise and eat and drink from anywhere they felt like, except for one tree. Allah told them to stay away from that tree or they will be of the wrongdoers. Iblis, who is also known as Shaytan, planned to trick Adam and Hawa into eating from that tree and making them fall into disobedience. Shaytan whispered and whispered to them until he finally managed to make them slip and eat from the tree.
Due to Adam and Hawa disobeying Allah’s command, they were sent out of Paradise and onto earth, where they both repented and asked Allah to forgive them for their mistake and Allah, the most Merciful, forgave them, and they stayed on earth worshipping Allah.
